Fair-the-Well! Reflecting on the semester.

Image
Image by: geralt ( CC0 CC ) Over the span of the semester in this class, I got to experience a more in depth look as well as experience what it is like to work as a group to collaborate in projects that require a decent amount of cooperation between members of the group. Also learning about the different aspects of what it means to collaborate with other people for a cause. Whether it is a big collaboration or something small, it is important to know just what has to be done. It was also a great experience getting to try out different ways in which to collaborate with other people, such as us Wikipedia to further develop a topic that was slightly lacking. The weekly blog post felt was a great way for use to express ourselves as well as share what we have been learning while taking this course. Two blog post I had made that I felt were good were the post about toxicity in online gaming which was titled "Why you got to be so toxic?" and the blog post "Reddit, a collab...

The Gender Gap in Wikipedia

Image
Image by: LaMèreVeille ( CC BY-SA 4.0 ) When it comes to Wikipedia there is a noticeable gap between the gender that is mostly contributing to the post that are made and how there is a big disparity between the amount of information for a particular post will have. In the article " Critical Digital Praxis in Wikipedia: The Art + Feminism Edit-A-Thon " it states that studies have shown that about 83% of the people to contribute to the encyclopedia are male, while the other 13% are female. That alone can give an idea of how Wikipedia must look when it comes to the amount of contribution that is being contributed by the different genders,. Another state that was discussed is how you can see the disparity between topics such as if the topic revolved around teenagers. If you were to look up a topic about friendship bracelets you may only get a few lines or maybe paragraphs about it, while if you looked up something about baseball you would get very detailed information about i...

Is Wikipedia always true?

Image
Image By: Wikipedia.Inc (CC BY-SA 3.0) This week as well as in the upcoming week, we are working with Wikipedia. We are looked at wiki post as well as editing a post that we felt needed some work. That being said, this made me think about just how much free reign people have to edit what they want on Wikipedia. A perfect example of this that was shown in class was from the Colbert Report. In this Steven Colbert goes onto Wikipedia and changes information about his own show as well encourages the viewers and audience to go onto Wikipedia and change the information about an elephant in Africa. This then lead to that page being frozen due to the influx of people that were trying to get onto Wikipedia in order to edit that page(.1). This makes me think about what exactly can you trust on Wikipedia, sure some things maybe facial and true. But, what stops people from putting completely false information up that people could believe is true? 1.  Colbert Report - Wikiality

Another Project incoming!

Image by: Love Food Hate waste NZ (CC BY-SA 4.0) In class we are going to be having another presentation, however unlike the last presentation that was a website and prezi, we will be making a short video about a cause you find meaningful and support it. The topic the group I am in is about food and the environment, which can cover quite a number of different areas. With a topic like this it will be important that we narrow the topic down so that we aren’t too vague and still can cover what we need to clearly. I personally like the topic we are covering because food is a very important source in the world, and while searching about issue revolving food, is that we waste way too much food, and it is slowly affecting the environment.( Food waste ) The main reason for this is that we produce a significantly higher amount of food then we actually consume. Knowing this it makes me want to find out about more issues that the food has effected the environment.

Why you got to be so toxic?

Image
Image from: youtube.com/WatchMojo( Video thumbnail source ) When it comes to the online gaming community, toxicity is a big topic that is always going to talked about. You will always find toxic players regardless of the game you decide to play. In the article "Can a video game company tame toxic behavior?"(Link) they use the game League of Legends as the game they monitored the toxicity seeing the game as well over 60 million players. It’s a given with so many people you will run into the people who are toxic and badmouth of or harass other players. There are multiple ways one can be toxic, the most common one used in League of Legends in through text chat where people will type out what they say. Other games such as Call of Duty and Overwatch where they have a voice chat people can verbally harass other players instead of just typing it down. I can't even count the amount of times I have heard people calling each other "Bitch" and other words of t...

Media just keeps evolving!

Image
Image by: Geralt (CC0 Creative Commons) As time goes by, evolution is a constant thing in our lives. Media as a whole seems to evolve at an extremely fast rate. No matter what type of media is it, it just continues to evolve. One thing that is the same no matter what kind of evolution takes place in media is that the older media or traditional media which consisted of television broadcast, radio's, newspapers, books, and magazines. With these traditional forms of media, it was able to create the stable of what we call social media today. An example used in the reading we had to read is how our phones still have the shutter sound feature in the camera’ which the shutter feature was in traditional camera. This was added into digital phones as well as cell phones to help the user know when they are taking a photo. Another example of a media that was kind of influenced by traditional media was media such as digital content like books and magazines. Media will continue to evolv...

Lets Present a presentation

Image
Image by: Geralt (C.C0 Creative Commons) This week was full of presentations covering tuckmans 5 stages of group development. Each group used different means to cover these 5 stages. Most groups decided to use movies or television series to cover this such as "Friends", "The Longest Yard", "School or Rock", and "Cool Runnings". Each one of these movies covers the 5 stages in many ways. Some were more interesting and understanding while others were a bit more in depth where you would have to look into it to see it. Each one also had stronger points in them in others when it came to identify which stage what which. In the movies such as "The Longest Yard" and "Cool Running" it is very clear where the stages are covered. Such examples is the forming stages of these movies where there are either tryouts to join a team. These movies also showed the conflicts that are seen in the storming stages where people show their opinio...
